1. Automated submission software.
Products are available online that promise to submit your web site to not only
the market leading search engines, but thousands of others too.
Some of these products can be useful for submitting your web site to many of
the free directories that exist around the web, but in terms of ranking for your
keywords, they will ultimately be of little or no help.
Steps have been taken by many engines to combat the use of such programs, as
they are one of the most common ways of attempting to artificially inflate the
ranking of fledgling and low-grade websites. We have heard many reports from users
of certain programs being banned or penalised by the major search engines. Whilst
we cannot specifically mention which products to be wary of, a search for the
term ‘search engine submission software’ will reveal some of the worst
offenders.
Another tempting use for automated software lies in the promise to automatically
generate reports that list keyword ranking positions in all the major search engines.
Again, it is possible for SEs to detect such practice and impose penalties as
a result. A much more effective way of checking referral performance is a detailed
analysis of your web server logs.
